So far, at least 21 bodies have been located, and two of the dead have been identified at the crash scene. The relatives of the dead were called to Sao Paulo to provide the authorities with DNA samples, and to help identify the bodies. Some experts speculate that there may have been a malfunction in the plane’s defrosting system, which caused damage to the engine.

According to the Brazilian authorities, “no emergency signal was sent” by the plane, which was inspected the day before the flight.

It was a routine domestic flight of the Brazilian airline VOEPASS, operated by an ATR-72 model aircraft. On board the plane were 58 passengers and four crew members. The rescue forces and local authorities are on the scene and continue the search and rescue efforts.

This is not the first time in recent years that planes of this model have suffered accidents. In 2015, a TransAsia airline ATR-72 crashed into a river just five kilometers after taking off from Taipei airport. Six years earlier, a Bangkok Airways model plane skidded out of control during takeoff and crashed into an old control tower in a hidden line.
