Many people deal with seasonal allergies, primarily in the spring and fall. While these seasons are good for hosting barbecues, some people may develop a meat allergy from an insect.

Spring is in full swing, and the sun is back. This season, conducive to idleness and barbecues, is also the one when ticks are particularly active. The reason ? These insects prefer moderate heat accompanied by humidity. And who says ticks, also says bite. But did you know that these can cause an allergy ? Explanations.

Why can a tick cause an allergy?

In reality, the culprit is not actually the tick, but rather its molecule, called alpha-gal. Alpha-gal is a sugar found in the gut and saliva of a class of ticks called “the star tick”. It is also present in the flesh of mammalian meat, such as beef, pork or mutton for example. During a prick, the alpha-gal is injected directly into the victim’s blood circulation. In reaction to this unknown molecule, the body produces antibodies to quickly eject it.

The problem ? Red meat contains alpha-gal. After ingesting it, the person bitten by this tick can see his immune system go into defense mode. Adverse effects, which are actually allergic reactions, can be felt three to seven hours following eating.
