For centuries, the sea was scary, we feared diseases. The baths were reserved for the insane and the epileptics, the beaches were places where one did not go.

It was in the middle of the 18th century that things changed, under the impetus of an English doctor. Richard Russell launches the first sea baths as therapy, in the small resort of Brighton, in the south of England. The phenomenon gradually spread to France during the 19th century, but it was especially in the second part of the 20th century that things accelerated, notably thanks to… the cyclist Louison Bobet.
