The Facebook founder chose the Pacific island to build his luxury self-sufficient bunker. A pharaonic project worth 250 million euros which says a lot regarding the survivalist whims of tech billionaires.
Waiting for the end of the world, yes, but hearing the sound of the waves… According to several American media, Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg is building a huge anti-apocalyptic complex on the island of Hawaii, off the coast of the Pacific. The building, named “Koolau Ranch» should cost the American billionaire more than 250 million euros, making him one of the “most expensive personal construction projects in modern history“, as recently pointed out by New York Post .
At first glance, “Koolau Ranch» does not differ much from other dream homes prized by billionaires: gigantic, the property would have around thirty bedrooms and as many bathrooms, all in two mansions with a total surface area of 57,000 square feet – the size of ‘a soccer field. Another building will have a gym, several swimming pools, a sauna, a hot tub and a tennis court. The property is dotted with guest houses: depending on the New York PostMark Zuckerberg has already organized two corporate events there.
Still, the most interesting – and intriguing – part of the house is located underground. According to the investigative media Wired , who investigated on site, Zuckerberg allegedly had a huge self-sufficient bunker of 464 m² built there. Everything is planned so that the billionaire and his family can find refuge there in the event of an apocalyptic disaster: the shelter is capable of supplying itself with electricity, as well as water, thanks to a gigantic cistern 17 meters high 6 meters wide. The entire bunker would be equipped with around twenty surveillance cameras.
This last detail says a lot regarding the paranoia of the boss of Meta…. The journalists of Wired say that Zuckerberg is ready to do anything to keep the progress of the construction site secret. “No one working on this project is allowed to talk regarding what they are building», writes the media, which specifies that almost all of the workers are linked to the billionaire “by a strict non-disclosure agreement“. Several of them have already been forced to leave their posts due to suspected leaks to the press. One more scandal for the project, while Zuckerberg is already being singled out for having violated the rights of native Hawaiians to dispose of their land.
Survivalism, the ultimate fad of billionaires
Transhumanism, telepathy… The father of Facebook had already expressed (many) futuristic whims in the past. His interest in survivalism was less well known, even if he is far from being the first billionaire to worry regarding the end of the world. Survivalism is even in vogue among the ultra-rich. In his book Survival of the Richestmedia theorist Douglass Rushkoff recounted his encounter with a group of billionaire preppers obsessed with building anti-apocalyptic bunkers.
The islands are particularly popular for waiting out the end times. All-powerful Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos spent $147 million to buy two mansions on Indian Creek Island, Florida, which is home to several bunkers. Outside the United States, billionaires are turning to New Zealand, “now riddled with bunkers built for the technological elite” according to Wired. The latest to have set up shop there is Sam Altman, the famous founder of OpenAI. Like Zuckerberg, the young tech prodigy recently acquired a luxurious anti-apocalyptic property there.
