The bill to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court to 21 was presented in the Senate

Senator Abdul Qadir presented a bill on increasing the number of judges in the Senate session on Monday, which states that the number of judges in the Supreme Court should be 20, apart from the Chief Justice of Pakistan.

While presenting the bill, Senator Abdul Qadir said that ‘due to the small number of judges in the Supreme Court, cases take years.’

‘Constitutional matters are coming up in the Supreme Court a lot. A larger bench is formed and judges hear constitutional matters. Cases worth billions of rupees are stuck in the Supreme Court and the Supreme Court does not have time to hear them. Our judicial system is bottom-up.’

However, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf senators have opposed this bill.

During the meeting, PTI Senator Ali Zafar said that ‘this law has come suddenly to increase the number of judges.’

He said that seven judges are being sought, we are ready to increase the number of two judges. If the number of judges is to be increased, first increase from the subordinate judiciary.’

On this occasion Federal Law Minister Prime Minister Nazir Tarar while speaking in the Senate meeting said that it is a fact, cases of death penalty of people are pending. Life imprisonment cannot exceed 25 years but one man spent 34 years in prison pending appeal.’

The federal law minister said that ‘PTI is worried as if something has to be seized, why will this happen?’

He further said that ‘We have received a request from Peshawar to increase ten judges. There is a PTI government, we are giving ten judges there.’
