The end of life issue is back on track in the Senate. After the false start due to the absence of the government, last Tuesday, the Democratic Party’s bill, signed by Alfredo Bazoli, is finally scheduled for next Thursday by the Justice and Social Affairs commissions of the Senate, even if it will have to be compared with the text supported by the majority presented by Forza Italia. A debut therefore full of tension between the opposition and the government coalition.
Text in committee
“It is clear that this executive wants to imitate its leader, hiding his head under his jacket so as not to approve a regulatory text”, is the attack from Orfeo Mazzella, M5s group leader in the Social Affairs Commission. “As always, the Meloni government answers ‘absent’,” he added. Among the corridors of Palazzo Madama it is noted that, conservatism and obstructionism aside, the government may want to drag out the end-of-life issue, “deciding not to decide”, at least for the moment. «I hope that the Commission is actually established this time, and that there aren’t yet another stratagem by the majority», explained Bazoli.
The call of the Consulta
The issue in the joint issue in the Senate does not only concern the issue of the need for intervention by the legislator, requested by the Constitutional Court since October 2018 and renewed a few days ago. The bill filed by Forza Italia, signed by the vice president Adriano Paroli, puts on paper greater restrictions than those introduced by the Constitutional Court in 2019. «It is clear that the text they have filed is almost provocative because it ignores the Court’s ruling on the case Capped. He wouldn’t resist any appeal for a minute”, added Bazoli. Furthermore, compared to the progress of the law approved in 2017 on the living will, with the text of the majority “we are definitely going backwards” on artificial nutrition and hydration, making it “no longer rejectable”.
The objectives of the centre-right
In the corridors of the Chamber and Senate, some opposition parliamentarians are wondering what the ‘ratio’ might be that is ‘hidden’ in the majority’s re-proposing a text similar to that of the Catholic Paola Binetti. On the end of life, as on many ethical issues, Fi points out that the party certainly has an official, conservative line, but which has always allowed freedom of conscience. Among the Dems, however, there is the idea that the center-right wants to wink at their more extremist worlds, leaving everything as it is in the end. And then there are those who see, once more among the Democrats, a move to make it clear that the dialogue on the PD bill cannot take place, unless it is distorted.
