The bill for the new CHU could still climb by 55 million euros

“The CHU is facing a significant increase in the cost of works”, alerts the regional chamber of accounts in a report on the construction of the new public hospital project on the island of Nantes. The additional cost of the project would be 55 million euros “at least”, indicates the chamber, which would bring the total bill to around 1.3 billion euros. Originally, the move of the hospital to the island was to cost 600 million euros. It is, this time, the inflation of building materials, partly linked to the war in Ukraine, which explains this new budget increase.

Even more worrying, the regional chamber of accounts considers that, for the time being, this additional cost is “not financed”. She considers that this “seems difficult to sustain in its entirety for the finances of the CHU alone”, adding that “the revenue and expenditure forecasts” of the hospital “incorporate relatively optimistic assumptions”.

The CHU is less worried

For its part, the management of the Nantes University Hospital is less alarmist, stressing that the public contracts already signed with the companies make it possible to “finely follow the evolution of construction costs”. She wants to qualify the projections of the regional chamber of accounts, considering that “the volatility of the construction indices calls for caution”. The CHU also specifies that the consequences of inflation on investments in health are a problem known to the government, “national reflections” being undertaken.

“It is out of the question that the CHU, already heavily in debt to finance this move, has to support the inconsistency of the mayor of Nantes who validated and carried this project”, deplores Laurence Garnier (LR), leader of the group. right-wing opposition party to the city of Nantes. If it is indeed supported for a long time by the town hall of Nantes, the project of new hospital on the island of Nantes is however supported by the State.

Under construction for a year, the new hospital on the island of Nantes will open in 2027, resulting in the closure of the Hôtel-Dieu site. It will offer all medical specialties in one place, mainly for short hospital stays. The Laënnec hospital site, in Saint-Herblain, will be partially maintained.
