The biggest technological flop of 2023 has arrived: a €40 video game abandoned after 4 days

In Gollum’s shoes

May 25, 2023, German developer Daedalic Entertainment invites you to play as the infamous Gollum in The Lord of the Rings Gollum. The point of view is original but this new adaptation of JRR Tolkien on home consoles is horrible. The graphics are from another era. A myriad of bugs tarnish the experience.

July 2023, Daedalic Entertainment draws the lessons of this resounding failure and announces that it will focus exclusively on publishing. Goodbye development.

Excessive promises

Even if Redfall, Payday 3 or even Call of Duty Modern Warfare III are difficult to see due to lack of means, ambition and/or talent, The Lord of the Rings Gollum easily retains its title of worst game in the months that follow of 2023.

Everything changes on December 7, 2023.

Russian developer Fntastic begins distributing The Day Before (PC) on Steam in early access for €38.99. Principle of early access: “Start playing now and get involved during its development. ”

Even if the game is not 100% finished, the studio promises wonders with this title supposed to bring together the best of The Division and The Last of Us. The pitch: players compete in an open, devastated and populated by zombies infected by a mysterious virus.

Fermeture subite du studio

From the first hours, buyers are shooting at The Day Before. No promise seems to be kept: the map is strangely empty, the content is minimal, the gameplay is sluggish, etc.

We are not far from an industrial accident, but it is not uncommon for a studio to recover following a catastrophic start, via patches and updates. Example: Cyberpunk 2077 from CD Projekt, No Man’s Sky from Hello Games.

If patches are hastily applied on December 8, 2023, the improbable verdict falls on December 11, 2023. In a message published on X (formerly Twitter), the developer Fntastic announces that the time has come to close the doors and to abandon further development The Day Before… four days following its launch!

“It is important to note that we did not take money from the general public during the development of The Day Before,” insists the studio. “There were no pre-orders or crowdfunding campaigns. We worked tirelessly for five years, putting our blood, sweat and tears into the game.”

What regarding the first buyers?

In another message published on December 12, 2023 on Steam, the studio suggests a possibility of reimbursement.

“We are sorry that the game did not meet the expectations of the majority of players. Today, we’re working with Steam to open refunds to all players who choose to issue a refund. We will give further updates in the near future. ”

Under normal circumstances, it is possible to request a refund for a Steam game shortly following purchase, provided you have played it for less than two hours.
