Pinocchio and games From Software, that’s what catches the eye. Far from the radar since its announcement, the game took advantage of the Summer Game Festival to give its release date and offer players a playable demo version. We were among those who tested it.
Expected for the month of August, the game Lies of P made a surprise appearance during the Summer Game Fest on Thursday evening. Through a new trailer, the South Korean developers of Round8 Studio gave news of their title. They slightly postponed the release of their game to refine it, while announcing a demo version playable for free on PC but also PlayStation and Xbox. What to get an idea of the ambition of the studio but also of its potential weapons. Is there enough to shake up the hegemony of Souls-like posed by From Software from which it is inspired? First elements answered in this article.
Pinocchio the survivor
We find a fairly extensive customization
Because yes, hard not to compare Lies of P to a “Bloodborne crossed with Pinocchio“. The player embodies the latter and must find Geppetto his creator. He must wander in the fictional city of Krat fallen into the hands of puppets who want to do battle. To repel their assaults, Pinocchio can count on different weapons and handles of weapons : foil, truncheon… He has a normal blow and a charged blow, can dodge enemy attacks using rolls, use different objects or even use the powers linked to each weapon/handle combination. armed.
Don’t be afraid of clowns.
On paper, therefore, everything is comparable to FromSoftware’s games. With a few details that will probably make the difference, such as the degree of finish. For the moment, Lies of P is fishing a little on this side: the collision system is not very developed and it happens very quickly that we take blows with the firm impression of not having been hit by enemy movement. A big pitfall for this kind of games which does not however manage to remove the excellent sensations of slicing puppets. The dose of challenge is present and a majority of players will have to try it several times before passing certain fights.
A very present atmosphere
In addition to the fights, Lies of P recalls From Soft’ by its artistic direction. It’s hard not to see the Bloodborne resemblances in the gothic features of Krat Town. It enjoys a certain verticality which is fun to explore every corner. Shortcuts can be hidden everywhere and it must be recognized that it is easier to enjoy exploration once unlocked. All the streets are alike and the level-design does not shine one way or another: despite the possibility of teleporting between places already visited, you quickly lose your way.
This dark art direction is employed by Round8 Studio to deliver their mature take on the Pinocchio tale. A story for children known to all that the studio has deliberately chosen for its notoriety. The wooden puppet is best known for having a long nose when lying: a feature carried over from Lies of P that does not show its potential in the demo. On paper, the fact of lying can give rise to several branches for the story but that was not the case here: deceiving your interlocutor is essential if you want to continue the rest of the adventure.
In summary, Lies of P has everything on paper to offer a solid alternative to FromSoftware games but especially for those who are desperately waiting for FromSoft and PlayStation to somehow update the Bloodborne PS4 released in 2015 If Round8 Studio has some areas of progress to follow, especially with regard to the collision system, Lies of P can be the nice surprise of this second half of 2023 and offer a choice alternative while also waiting for the DLC of ‘Elden Ring, it official. See you on September 19 to find out if, once once more, Pinocchio would have led us by the nose.
