YOU CAN SEE: Why did it take so long for Nintendo to embrace online gaming? reggie replies
Reggie: “Nintendo America and Europe tried to educate Japan regarding online gaming”
In a recent interview for the GeekWire podcast —and to promote his next book—, Reggie was asked if he felt any kind of remorse or if he learned any lessons from Nintendo’s decision not to contemplate online play as quickly as PlayStation and Xbox did.
The businessman answered the following: “I am going to answer the question from two points of view. First, the business philosophy of Nintendo It has always been regarding doing things differently, innovating in a way that shows the strength of the company instead of playing with the strength of others”, he says. “And so, for example, when it came to multiplayer, Nintendo really excelled at what we internally called ‘sofa sets‘ (couch gaming), which is sitting next to someone and enjoying Mario Kart, Wii Sports, etc. That in-person multiplayer really was a place where the company excelled, and that’s where it put a tremendous amount of focus.”
“To do online multiplayer, the company really needed to think regarding what is the new type of game, what are the different types of experiences that we are going to need to create to excel in that form of game now. And honestly, it took the company a while to think regarding that (…) I would say that the core success started with their taking Smash Bros, a key franchise for them. The online one worked exceptionally well, then came a shooter (Splatoon) and etc”.
“The second thing to highlight —he continued— are the cultural differences. Nintendo did not see a great opportunity in online. It was an area where America and Europe were constantly trying to educate Japan (Nintendo subsidiaries) regarding the importance of online gaming and investing in infrastructure (…) This is where Microsoft invested so significantly, and made online gaming their competitive advantage”.
