Russia – Dr. Polina Vasilieva, a Russian nutrition expert, announced that elderly people who do not suffer from diabetes, heart and kidney disease should eat meat to maintain muscle mass.
The expert said in an interview with Gazeta.Ru: “The ideal choice is low-fat meat, which includes turkey, rabbit, chicken, and veal. Because saturated fats contribute to obesity, atherosclerosis, and other cardiovascular diseases.”
According to her, all types of meat should be eaten with caution, so that their quantity per day does not exceed 100 grams, and it is best to specify one or two meat-free days per week. The best ideal ways to cook meat are boiling, steaming, and grilling in the oven.
She says: “With age, the pace of metabolic processes in the body slows down, and physical activity decreases in older people. This results in a reduced need for proteins, fats and carbohydrates. On the other hand, muscle mass decreases in older people and fat percentage increases. So in this case, they should eat enough protein to prevent rapid loss of muscle mass. The need also increases with age for mineral elements (calcium, potassium, magnesium, and iron) and vitamins (B12, A, D, E), and all of these elements are found in meat.”
The doctor recommends limiting meat consumption or switching to a special diet for those who suffer from atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, fat metabolism disorders, kidney stones, kidney failure, gout, digestive system diseases, and others. It is best to consult a specialist doctor regarding choosing a diet, taking into account age and the presence of contraindications.
