This year, it will be at its maximum on the night of Monday, August 12, and many meteors are expected until dawn the next morning, when the radiant will rise high in the sky. There is no moonlight late at night, which is conducive to visual observation.
What kind of meteor shower? The expected number of meteors is
Northeastern sky (Tokyo) around 22:00 on August 12
・Most this year: Around 23:00 on August 12 (Monday)
・Best viewing time in Japan: Late night on Monday, August 12th to early morning on Tuesday, August 13th
The Perseid meteor shower is one of the three major meteor showers along with the Tetragonal meteor shower in January and the Geminid meteor shower in December, ranking first and second in the number of observable meteors each year.
The peak activity is expected to be around 11 pm on the 12th (Monday), with the radiant point
expected to rise in the sky from the late night to the early morning of the 13th (Tuesday). According to the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, if the surrounding sky is dark enough and the field of vision is good, you have a chance of seeing about 40 meteors per hour.
In addition, this year the moon will set late at night, and the influence of moonlight will disappear, providing favorable conditions for visual observation.
Meteors don’t just appear around the constellation Perseus, they can appear anywhere in the night sky, so try to look as wide as possible in the sky.
*Radiant point: The point on the celestial sphere from which meteors (meteoroids) fly out.
As with other meteor showers, you can expect to observe more meteors than usual in the days before and after the peak. If observations are not possible on peak day due to weather conditions, it is best to observe a few days before or after peak day.
According to the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, unexpected activity occurred about a day and a half after the peak last year, with more than double the number of meteors observed at the peak in previous years.
This year, the Earth will be in the same position around 11 o’clock midnight on Sunday the 14th. Although unlikely, please keep an eye out for unexpected activity.
1. The number of meteors is expected to increase over time.
The Perseid meteor shower’s radiation is highest at dawn. Generally speaking, there is more meteor flow when the radiant is high, so more meteors are seen from early morning to early morning, rather than when activity is most active. Likewise, on the preceding and following days, the number of streams gradually increased from early morning to early morning.
2. There were many bright meteors, some leaving traces.
There are many bright meteors in the Perseid meteor shower, and there may be extremely bright meteors called fireballs, as well as meteors that leave traces called meteor trails.
3. A precious meteor shower in the cold season
In the northern hemisphere, major meteor showers mostly occur in autumn and winter, so the Perseid meteor shower, which peaks in midsummer, is a precious meteor shower that can be observed without worrying about the cold. As a fun way to enjoy your summer vacation, try looking at repellents together.
Due to the influence of Typhoon No. 5, the area where the meteor shower can be observed is expected to be limited.
Clouds tend to spread across the country, making the weather unsuitable for observation. However, in northern Hokkaido, southern Kankan, parts of western Japan, and the Nansei Islands, there may be a chance to observe the meteor shower through cloud gaps.
