Real Greek
The Italians are proud of their gastronomic tradition and always claim to have by far the best cuisine in the world, which enthusiastic holidaymakers in Italy can probably confirm at any time.
Our southern neighbors invented the pizza, which they now publicly want to protect from pineapples, but they didn’t. The Greeks, or the Etruscans, are said to have been the first in ancient times to put ingredients on a flatbread made of flour, water and salt and to bake it on stones over an open fire. These flatbreads were called “Pita”, from which the word pizza developed over time, which today exists worldwide in more than 1000 variants. A culinary success story that goes on and on.

A real sacrilege
“Italian cuisine must be defended,” is how the Italian Minister of Agriculture justified the move to define Italian delicacies as intangible cultural heritage. People are annoyed regarding defacements, saying Hawaiian pizza is a “real sacrilege”. Words that sound very much like protectionism, but understandable are. Croissants in an indefinable sauce with melted cheese are just not the same as spaghetti cacio e pepe or pasta quattro formaggi. Of course you can put pineapple, sausages, fries on a pizza. But should you really? It has nothing to do with a real pizza.
Imagine that schnitzel with sauce would be associated with Austrian cuisine. Even.
