With the WH-1000XM5, Sony offers the pinnacle of its know-how on the headphone market, including the best noise reduction on the market. It succeeds a very good WH-1000XM4 and brings minor improvements, but it radically changes its design. This weekend, the ultimate noise reduction headphones see their price drop from 419 euros to 297 euros at several merchants.

More than a year after its release, the Sony WH-1000XM5 still remains the headset with the best noise reduction on the market, and it doesn’t just rely on it. Between dynamic performance and Olympic autonomy, it also presents a radically different design from its predecessor. This weekend only, the Sony WH-1000XM5 drops below 300 euros at Fnac et Darty.

A redesigned design but not the most practical

The improvements made to the Sony WH-1000XM5 are minor overall, except for the design which is different in several aspects. The headband is notably thinner and more flexible than before, and another new feature which is less pleasing: the helmet can no longer fold on itself. Which becomes annoying when storing it in a bag, only the earpieces are articulated since they can be rotated up to 140 degrees. Nothing changes in terms of comfort and the felted matte coating has the most beautiful effect.

Comfortable and durable. The Japanese manufacturer communicates for its WH-1000XM5 an autonomy of 30 hours with active noise reduction and 40 hours without it. This is what the Sony WH-1000XM4 offered and this duration could be confirmed during our test. We were able to use the headset for 30 hours and 17 minutes before it fell flat, which amounts to emptying the battery in around ten days with three hours of listening per day. To recharge with the supplied USB-C cable, it takes 3h30.

Notable improvements but nothing transcendent

While the Sony WH-1000XM4 relied on 40 mm transducers, the WH-1000XM5 went to a diameter of 30 mm but still manages to do better than its predecessor in terms of sound reproduction. The sound is more precise and more natural, thanks to a different structure of the transducers. On the Bluetooth side, which can be multipoint, this audio headset counts on SBC, AAC and LDAC codecs, classic codecs.

Finally, let’s come to ANC, an area in which Sony has created a reputation for excellence. While the active noise reduction was already one of the best on the market, the Sony WH-1000XM5 does even better by going from four to eight microphones, these are covered with a fabric filtering gusts and thus avoid noise parasites. This headset analyzes its environment and offers appropriate ANC, but it is also equipped with an atmospheric pressure sensor to detect if the user is on a plane.
