A glitch in Super Mario 64, caused by an extremely unlikely cosmic ray, sparked madness among the speedrunner community

This is one of those stories where you have to rub your eyes a couple of times to face it calmly. Imagine that you are playing on your console and suddenly your character does something unexpected. Nothing weird regarding that, right? Meet bugs it is not something impossible. However, it is not so common that if someone tries to replicate this error, it does not happen in any of the ways, because there are technical methods that allow it to be recreated. If not, ask the speedrunner community… they know it very well, because they “live” basically taking advantage of any glitch that occurs to set record times.

Well, this was exactly what happened when the player DOTA_Teabag he was racing once morest another speedrunner. The game in question was super mario 64, one of the most popular among the community, and something very strange happened. At the time when he was trying to get the eight red coins from the nivel Tick Tock ClockMario’s character teleported automatically several heights until ending on the highest platform of the stage. “But what…what…? That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever seen”, was the speedrunner’s immediate reaction, completely stunned by what he had just witnessed.

The craziest glitch in Super Mario 64 was caused by cosmic rays

Finding a new glitch in a video game so loved by speedrunners like Super Mario 64 was quite an event. If it might be identified, it would be possible to exploit it to break the times established until then: a whole mine! So much so, that when one of Nintendo’s most prominent gaming speedrunners found out regarding the feat, he offered to a $1,000 reward to whoever figured out how to replicate that strange glitch. Against all odds, no one made it. Despite the effort invested, and exactly copying the original movements of DOTA_Teabag, it was an impossible task.

The affected byte changed from 11000101 to 11000100. As you can see… a single number!

It was then that a conclusion was reached that may seem crazy to you, but completely real: the glitch was caused by the cosmics rays (cosmic radiation) that comes to us from outer space and reacts with the Earth’s atmosphere. As a result, electronically charged subatomic particles are generated, which in very unlikely circumstances can affect, as on this occasion, the circuitry of a console. In particular, it has been found that Super Mario 64’s binary code was altered in the case of this speedrunner, giving rise to the famous error.

For you to be aware of the low probability of this phenomenon, it is enough that a part of the binary code changes from 0 to 1 (or vice versa). Specifically, the affected byte changed from 11000101 to 11000100. As you can see… a single number! However, it was enough to affect the position of the Super Mario character in the scene, which ended up at the top of the level. Yes, a real madness, but it was like that, as much as it is hard to believe.

However, you should know that this type of thing is very rare, with a probability of one in millions. So although we cannot rule out that a bug will occur for this reason in any of our games, it is most likely that there is a programming error. So cosmic rays do not work miracles, except this one, which was extremely unusual and one of those incredible stories that video games give us from time to time.
