If there’s ever an occasion for a makeover, it’s at the Costume Institute’s annual gala. While slipping into an extraordinary outfit can turn heads, a hairstyle and makeup are also part of the spectacular end result. Indeed, there are plenty of moments on the red carpet where hair and makeup have transformed a star’s look into one that’s ultra daring.
In the 80s, Cher traded in her raven black haircut for a sleek bun, showcasing her bright purple eyes, rosy cheeks and shinny earrings. In the 90s, Iman didn’t follow the minimalism trend as she instead opted for a ruby red lipstick and styled her hair in a huge braided bun, all adorned with a glittering brooch. In 2004, Amber Valletta drew its inspiration from the theme which was “Dangerous Liaisons: Fashion and Furniture in the 18th Century” drawing inspiration from the beauty looks of Marie Antoinetteopting for a powdery blonde and a rosy blush.
A unique beauty look to enhance the most original outfits
In 2013, the theme “Punk : Chaos to Couture” aroused great enthusiasm: Miley Cyrus was styled with an impressive platinum pixie cut, for a totally electric style. January Jones had she bleached her eyebrows to accentuate her graphic makeup, her eyes were inspired by Siouxsie Sioux. For the exhibition China : Through the Looking Glass in 2015, Rihanna had impressed on the red carpet in her now legendary yellow dress from the designer Guo Pei. In 2016, the star made a return to the future following the futuristic theme of “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology”. Taylor Swift meanwhile, revealed the time of this event a dazzling white dye while Ciara opted for a shimmering silver color with a metallic sheen.
Each year, the Met Gala honors a different theme. “Camp : Notes on Fashion” in 2019 remains engraved in the memories by its theatricality, whether it is eyes made up ofEzra Miller or Lily Collins dressed like Priscilla Presley on her wedding day Elvis wearing a puffy dress decorated with flowers. The disguise was more than rigorous this year!
