After snuggling up under three blankets from 5 p.m., the sun comes out a little longer each day. The perfect opportunity to come out and synthesize vitamin D! If you are not a big sportsman at heart, tell yourself that what matters is not so much intense physical effort as regular physical activity.
10,000 STEPS… OR NOT?
Why 10,000?
Around 1965, this “magic” number appeared in an campaign in Japan. The Yamasa company, wanting to capitalize on the holding of the Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 1964, marketed one of the first pedometers, “manpo-kei” or “counter of 10,000 steps”. It is the Japanese researcher, Yoshiro Hatano, who estimated that walking 10,000 steps per day allows you to spend some 300 Cal/d.
2022, the WHO recommends that adults aged 18 to 64 should devote “at least 150 to 300 minutes per week to moderate-intensity endurance activity”, to avoid overweight, but also prevent the appearance of cancers, strokes, diabetes, and improve our quality of life (reduced stress, better sleep, etc.).
For people who are elderly, sedentary or have chronic illnesses, experts are inclined to suggest starting by adding 1,000 steps per day, or a 10-15 minute walk, and increasing the duration of this daily walk each week until to reach approximately 7,500 steps per day.
The French below the health objective
Among the French, the average is 7,889 steps per day. It’s better than the Americans (4,500), but we still have a few strides to reach the ideal healthy threshold. However, you don’t have to walk to get there. Sports activities count, and logically even weigh more in terms of energy expenditure.
The 3,000 “remaining” steps represent approximately: 15 minutes of swimming or 15 minutes of cycling, 20 minutes of jogging, 45 minutes of DIY or gardening, 30 minutes of walking at moderate speed or 1 hour of yoga. In short, as soon as you have the opportunity: move!
Did you know ?
On distances of less than 5 km, the automobile
still represents 60% of journeys (home-to-work in particular). However, between 2 and 5 km, the bike
is the most effective and appropriate solution:
more economical, more convenient to park,
and more ecological!
