And if daydreaming, expressing anger or satisfying one’s laziness might improve performance? Several studies published in recent years tend to show that certain emotions, usually judged negativehave a reason for being, and are beneficial to our well-being and our development.

Anger improves abilities

Getting angry would make it easier to achieve certain goals. This is the observation made by American scientists, whose results were published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. To reach this conclusion, they placed 2,000 volunteers in various experiments, such as solving puzzles, playing video games, or participating in debates.

Beforehand, the candidates had been subjected to certain scenarios to arouse different emotions, placing them either in a state of amusement, in a state of anger, or in a neutral state. And it seems that angry individuals were more responsive and more inclined to resolve the proposed problems! The only downside: this increase in abilities can also be accompanied by a certain propensity to cheat…

Daydream to produce more

Down with ultra-busy schedules, where every minute is precious and daydreaming no longer has any place! Indeed, according to a study published in the journal Naturethe state of daydreaming (i.e. letting your thoughts wander, without time constraints or specific themes) improves brain plasticity by creating new neural networks. Which, ultimately, makes it possible to increase productivity over a longer period of time.

The same goes for laziness, another emotion often judged very negatively in our society. However, a German study published last year on the open science platform Frontier shows that it is completely normal to feel more tired and less inclined to action, especially in winter period : in humans as in certain animals, the necessary duration of sleep increases as the brightness decreases. Resting more often in winter is therefore completely normal and necessary!

So, instead of choosing untenable resolutions for 2024, it would be better to express your emotions more, even the negative ones.
