The Benefits of Fixed Energy Contracts: Lower Prices and Certainty

2023-12-05 16:41:00

The price of fixed energy contracts for a period of one year continued its downward trend in December, Creg highlighted on Tuesday. A development that is all the more remarkable as winter approaches, in the wake of the first weeks of extreme cold.

Fixed contracts are falling among all suppliers, both for gas and electricity. With the cheapest operator, the difference with a variable contract only reaches 280 euros per year (80 euros for electricity and 200 for gas). In November, the ‘risk premium’ that the supplier charges for the guarantee of a fixed price over one year still reached 450 euros

For consumers looking for certainty, the period therefore seems favorable to opt for a fixed contract. The regulator nevertheless recommends vigilance, with certain suppliers demanding significant compensation (which can go up to 150 euros) which would be lost in the event of a change of contract.

Additionally, variable rates remained low in December. The upward trend generally observed during this period does not appear this year. “Wholesale markets are counting on significant gas supplies and stable electricity prices in Europe for the coming months”assures Creg.
