The teenager’s father explained in an interview with ABC6 that his son was at home with friends when he decided to take up the benadryl challenge. While his friends were filming, 13 year old body started having a seizure. At the hospital, Jacob’s father was told that his son would never wake up. The “Benadryl Challenge” began circulating on the social media platform in 2020. At that time, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a warning about the dangers associated with taking higher doses than the recommended allergy medication.

The FDA then cited reports of teenagers ending up in hospital after participating in the challenge. According to the agency, participating in this dangerous trend can result in “serious heart problems, epileptic seizures, coma, even death”.

The challenge is to take 12 to 14 pills, almost double the daily doserecommended and ten times the recommended dose for six hours, of an over-the-counter medication, diphenhydramineto cause hallucinationsand to film their Side effects.

A 15-year-old girl from Oklahoma died in 2020 after trying to complete the challenge. For its part, the Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas, said it treated three teenagers hospitalized after consuming “excessive amounts” of this drug (source 1).

The FDA previously revealed that it contacted TikTok about the dangerous videos and asked “to be vigilant in order to remove other videos that may be posted”. At the time, the agency also said medical professionals should be “aware” of the problem and “alert caregivers” to the trend. They also said allergy medications, as well as other prescription and over-the-counter medications, should be kept “up high and apart”.

Although TikTok has since banned searches for “Benadryl” on the app, attempts to search for the name of the allergy drug now result in other suggestions, such as “bena challenge” or “benary change”, which include videos on this dangerous trend.
