Alexander De Croo, the Belgian Prime Minister, was this Friday evening the Alex Reed of the television news on La Une. As Russian forces approach Kievthe Ukrainian capital, he recalls that the Belgian Defense “may be called upon to intervene in NATO interventions“. The Prime Minister adds that”there is a request to send Belgian soldiers to NATO’s border with Russia“.
For him, this conflict, “it’s cold war 2.0. In the NATO summit we had earlier, the countries that are on this eastern border feel intimidated in relation to Russia. It is the collective, the block of NATO, which must play. We must show Russia that this NATO border will not move a millimeter“.
Alexander De Croo sees in Vladimir Putin “a belligerent autocrat“. He adds : “It is pushing this whole region into enormous instability. The European continent is pushed into an instability that has not been seen since the end of the Cold War.“
Asked regarding a surge in fuel prices in a tense international context, the Prime Minister replied: “We are in a crisis situation. We will have consequences. We will make sure that they are not too dramatic. […] I hope the crisis will calm down quickly and that it will have a short-term impact. If we see that it is lasting, for example in fuel prices, we will have to look at what types of measures are necessary.“
