The beginning of Masnytsia: what holidays are celebrated on March 11

Today, March 11, Shrovetide begins. World Plumbers Day and Commonwealth Day are celebrated around the world.

Shrovetide

March 11 marks the beginning of Shrovetide, which is celebrated a whole week before the beginning of Great Lent. Since Great Lent in 2024, according to the new calendar, begins on March 18 and will last until May 4, then Shrovetide will be held from March 11 to 17.

At Masnytsia, pagan traditions of celebrating winter and meeting spring were interwoven, overlapping with the Orthodox church calendar. The holiday reminded unmarried people about the importance of starting a family, and the straw effigy burned at the end of the week – about the victory of spring over winter.

It was forbidden to eat meat dishes for a whole week before Lent. But they were replaced by traditional Ukrainian dumplings, nalysniki, pancakes with salty fillings, cheese cakes and other dishes made from milk, eggs and cheese.

Each week of Shrovetide has its own name and traditions. The first day is called “Meeting” and therefore it is customary to invite those closest to you and treat them with goodies.

The holiday is marked in red in the calendar of plumbers, installers, designers of heating, sewage and water supply systems. The purpose of the holiday is to recognize the important role of the plumbing profession in social life and in maintaining the health and well-being of mankind.
