Despite the high inflation, we don’t have to worry regarding high prices on the open market. “On King’s Day we work with round prices. So you don’t easily increase a grab by a few cents.”
“Some things may well be more expensive than in previous years,” says Peter Hein van Mulligen, chief economist at Statistics Netherlands. “But it’s a second-hand market. So if you don’t agree with the prices, you can always haggle.”
People who put down a grab bag or sell other items on King’s Day do not have to deal with higher costs for energy or personnel, for example. “Those are the reasons that the prices of groceries are now rising,” says the economist. You don’t have much trouble with that when you’re filling a grab bag.
The prices of the catering entrepreneurs are probably a bit higher. “Event admission prices may be more expensive. And also the beer at cafes,” says Van Mulligen.
“Ultimately, price increases are of all times,” says Marten van Garderen, economist at ING. “When we paid a dime for a loaf of bread, we also paid less for a grab in the grab bag.” Now that we pay more for a loaf of bread, you will eventually see that reflected on the free market.
Although prices change, according to Van Mulligen, some things always stay the same. “Whatever it costs, you still can’t get rid of that pile of old CDs on the paving stones.”
