Here comes the controversial new chapter of the Ferrari legend: a British company has equipped a Testarossa with a Tesla engine.
The announcement of a Ferrari Testarossa from the 1980s equipped with a Tesla electric motor is likely to raise eyebrows among enthusiasts of powerful engines and beautiful displacements. This daring transformation was carried out by the British company Electric Classic Cars, which opted to replace the Testarossa’s flat-12 engine with a Tesla-designed all-electric powertrain. The In Teslaro sees its performance increase
Nicknamed In Teslaro on the web, the car has undergone numerous modifications to accommodate its new electric motor. The relief is significant since the original V12 weighed 420 kg, while the electric motor is much more compact and lightweight. However, installing the necessary batteries to power this new powertrain might offset these weight savings.
The switch to electric has also improved the performance of the Testarossa. Power has increased from 390 hp and 490 Nm of torque for the original V12 to 544 hp and 600 Nm of torque for the new electric motor. Adjustments have also been made to the braking system, suspension setup and weight distribution. The gear lever, for its part, has remained in place, but is only used to select forward or reverse gear.
This metamorphosis is likely to displease purists, attached to the roar of the V12 and the very essence of what constitutes a Ferrari. Nevertheless, the Teslarossa testifies to a desire to innovate and to the inevitable evolution of the automotive industry towards more environmentally friendly mobility. Whether we accept it or not, the future will be electric, and even legends such as the Ferrari Testarossa will have to adapt to this reality.
