“Me a real cook? Surely not!”

Before playing a chef in “The Bear”, Jeremy Allen White took cooking lessons, but he does not consider himself a cordon bleu.

In the American series, the 32-year-old actor plays Carmy Berzatto, a cook who returns to Chicago to take over his deceased brother’s restaurant. The second season of the soap opera premieres on Disney+ on August 16, 2023.

The first season of “The Bear” was a huge success. Is it extra pressure for second?

My colleagues gave me the best advice to deal with the attention I’m getting right now: don’t read anything about me in the media or on social media. It’s easier said than done, but it keeps me unaffected by negative reviews and remarks.

You won a Golden Globe early 2023 for your role. What does this success change for you?

There are a lot of people who have things to say to me, advice to give me… Well, it’s more advice they give to Carmy, my character (laughs). We tend to confuse reality and fiction when we talk to a TV comedian.

Are there any similarities between the life of a chef like the one you play in “The Bear” and that of an actor?

There is the same pressure to do well and to succeed in his recipe. It is this notion of giving the best of oneself to satisfy one’s customers that is similar. On a shoot as in a restaurant kitchen, it takes an extraordinary team to ensure that the end result is a success.

You took lessons at a culinary institution before filming “The Bear”. Are you a good cook now?

Me a real cook? Surely not! I will never pretend to believe that. When I started spending time in restaurants and taking cooking classes, I mostly wanted to learn gestures and retain as many details as possible about a chef’s attitude. It’s like a choreography where each assistant has his role to play.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received for stepping into Chef Carmy’s shoes?

Two of the producers, Coco and Matty (note: Courtney Storer and Matty Matheson), watch my every move. They are the first to stop filming if I make a mistake. I rely entirely on them. It reassures me to be able to play the comedy knowing that my technical gestures are observed by real restoration specialists.
