The return to the Brussels Bar is marked by the training of young lawyers, whose structure has been transformed this year. With, behind, the idea of better retaining talent.

The training of Brussels lawyers is in the throes of upheaval and a novelty will be put in place from September 25. Indeed, a first management training module provided by the Solvay Brussels School will be given to several dozen lawyers, over a period of six months. Among the topics discussed: defining your market and its positioning, accounting, human resources, apprehension of tech. Objective: to become a lawyer, legal technician, a responsible business leader.

“Lawyers are entrepreneurs when they have never been trained for this.”

Emmanuel Plasschaert

President of the Brussels Bar

This novelty is a symbol for the president of the French-speaking Brussels bar, Emmanuel Plasschaert, who is entering his second – and last – year at the head of the largest bar in the country, with more than 5,000 registered lawyers. It intends, in fact, to set up a bar academy, a platform that will bring together non-legal training. “Today, a lawyer cannot just be a good jurist. We have good lawyers, but not necessarily good managers. Lawyers are entrepreneurs even though they have never been trained for that. We try to remedy this,” says Emmanuel Plasschaert. With, in the idea, to avoid the flight of talents. “The bar is a good training school, for those who wish to become judges, in particular. But above all we want to prevent the youngest from leaving the bar for the wrong reasons.”

“The world has changed”

Behind this development of training in managerial matters is the desire to keep young lawyers in law firms, by getting in touch with the aspirations of the new generation, perhaps less prone to endless work weeks. than the previous ones.

2.500

gross euros

The remuneration of trainee lawyers has been established at 2,000 euros gross for the first year and 2,500 euros gross for the second.

Therefore the remuneration of trainees has been established at 2,000 euros gross for the first year and 2,500 euros gross for the second. “We might no longer tolerate that people who have done five years of study do not have a decent salary”, supports the chairman. At the same time, it is the internship supervisor who will bear the trainee’s training costs, set at 3,600 euros for three years.

“This generation wants a clear contractual framework, especially with regard to disability coverage,” notes Pierre-Yves Thoumsin, director of communications for the bar. “You have to make the oldest lawyers understand that the world has changed. Today, 14 hours of work a day, even on weekends, is no longer acceptable”, concedes the chairman of the Bar Plasschaert.
