The back-to-school allowance will be paid on Wednesday to the three million families concerned

The summer holidays end in three weeks and the students will have to plunge their noses back into the textbooks. From the diary to the pencil, through the kit and the binder, it will be time to ensure the purchase of school supplies. To cope with these expensive expenses, the back-to-school allowance (ARS), which helps parents with modest incomes to pay for schoolbags and other supplies, will be paid on Wednesday in mainland France and in most overseas departments, according to the government.

In Réunion and Mayotte, where the start of the school year takes place on August 17 and 23 respectively, the payment of the allowance took place on August 1. The amounts have been increased by 5.6% compared to the premium paid in the summer of 2022. Families with a child born between September 16, 2005 and December 31, 2017 inclusive, or a younger child already registered in CP, will be able to benefit from it.

What amount?

About three million families, or five million children aged 6 to 18, attending school or learning in a public or private establishment, are concerned. Granted subject to means testing, the ARS this year amounts to 398.09 euros for children aged 6 to 10, 420.05 euros for children aged 11 to 14, and 434.61 euros for adolescents aged 15 to 18 years old.

For who ?

This aid is subject to a resource ceiling, ie 25,775 euros per year for a dependent child, plus 5,948 euros for each additional dependent child. “When the family’s resources slightly exceed the ceiling, it then benefits from a back-to-school allowance at a reduced rate, decreasing according to its income”, had previously indicated the Ministry of Solidarity. The steps necessary to receive the payment are indicated on the website of the CAF.

Parents wishing to educate their child themselves at home cannot receive the ARS, unless the child is registered for correspondence courses – via the Cned for example.
