“The BA.2 subvariant can become dominant in a week”, assures Steven Van Gucht

The BA.2 subvariant of the coronavirus can become dominant within a week. This is what virologist Steven Van Gucht said on Friday during the press briefing of the Crisis Center and the Sciensano Public Health Institute regarding the epidemiological situation in Belgium.

However, this does not necessarily have to lead to an increase in the number of infections, Van Gucht stressed, because there is currently no increase in the absolute number of BA.2 infections.

Currently, the BA.1 subvariant, together with BA.1.1, still accounts for 70.6% of all infections in our country. The BA.2 subvariant accounts for 29.3% of all infections. “The delta variant is still found only rarely, in less than 1 case out of 1,000 infections”, specified the virologist.
