The average income of Belgians exceeded the 20,000 euro mark in 2021, the statistical office Statbel reported on Thursday. Net taxable income reached on average 20,357 euros, compared to 19,671 a year earlier. Flanders remains the region with the highest income.

With an amount of 21,776 euros, the average income of the Flemings exceeded the national average by 7%. The inhabitants of the Walloon Region and the Brussels-Capital Region had significantly less financial means: 19,192 euros for Walloons (5.7% below the Belgian average) and 16,068 for Brussels residents (21.1% less on an annual basis).

As in previous years, the province of Flemish Brabant had the highest average income per capita in 2021 (23,527 euros per inhabitant), ahead of Walloon Brabant (23,442 euros) and East Flanders (22,073 euros). Laethem-Saint-Martin, in the province of East Flanders, had the highest incomes in 2021 with an average of 33,249 euros per capita. The municipality was ahead of Keerbergen and Knokke-Heist. The first Walloon was Lasne, in sixth place (29,530 euros per inhabitant).

The Brussels municipalities were mainly at the other end of the scale, notes Statbel. With an average of 11,082 euros, Saint-Josse-ten-Noode had the lowest income, at 45.6% below the national average. Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, Anderlecht, Farciennes, Dison, Koekelberg and Schaerbeek were the other six municipalities whose average income per capita was at least 30% below the national average.
