The Average Cost of a TGV Ticket: Debunking Myths and Exploring Disparities in Pricing

2023-12-17 10:26:05

The CEO of the SNCF, Jean-Pierre Farandou, cited a figure which surprised more than one. According to him, a TGV ticket costs on average less than 45 euros. This is what he opposes to all those who find the high-speed train too expensive. The TF1info Auditors looked into where this surprising price came from.

“On average, the cost of a TGV ticket is €45, it’s cheaper than going by taxi to Roissy”said the boss of the SNCF on France Info this week-end. For those who regularly take the TGV, this estimate of the average price of a ticket was surprising. If the SNCF no longer communicates its figures since the opening of rail to competition, Samira El Gadir managed to locate where the one mentioned by Jean-Pierre Farandou came from. A verification that she details on the set of 8 p.m. on TF1, and which you can find in the video at the top of this article.

A fair figure, for the year 2022

Thanks to annual balance sheets of the Transport Regulatory Authority, we find the data which underpins the reasoning of the CEO of the SNCF. The calculation is very simple: we divide the TGV revenue in 2022 by the total number of passengers in 2022. The result shows that indeed, the average price of a TGV was indeed 44.70 euros that year.

Disparities that bias perception

If we have the impression of never paying this price, it is because an average, by definition, erases the disparities. For example, the calculation includes TGV inOui, the classic offer, but also Ouigo, the low-cost offer. For the latter, one ticket in two is less than 25 euros, although it only represents a quarter of journeys made in France. The price also depends on the distance, and the average doesn’t say that either. If we compare a Paris-Tours with a Paris-Toulouse, it is obviously not the same price: there is a difference of 57 euros on average.

The price paid will also depend on the period, habits, and profile of the customer. Samira El Gadir took the test for a Paris-Lyon on Saturday December 23, the first day of the holidays: the only available seat she found was 146 euros in first. A price that would drop to 64 euros during off-peak periods, and even half as much if you have an SNCF Advantage card, and book two months in advance. It is for all of these reasons that the price of 45 euros surprised many SNCF customers, who have never seen such a low price displayed when booking.
