The authorities are recalling the health recommendations as part of the withdrawal – recall of uncooked pressed cheeses made from raw milk (morbier, raclette and tomme), manufactured by the company Route des Terroirs. This withdrawal, initiated on December 8, 2023, follows investigations carried out around grouped cases of pediatric hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).
In November 2023, 6 cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) due to the Shiga toxin-producing E.Coli bacteria (STEC) were identified in a daycare center in Toulouse. The current state of health of these children no longer gives rise to concern.
Public Health France, in conjunction with the national reference center for Escherichia coli (Pasteur Institute and Robert Debré Hospital in Paris) and the General Directorate of Food, in coordination with the General Directorate of Health, immediately launched investigations into the cases of SHU in order to identify a possible source of common contamination and implement appropriate management measures.
These investigations led to the identification of converging epidemiological, microbiological and traceability elements, making the link between at least part of these cases of HUS and Morbier cheeses produced by the Route des Terroirs company, without being able at this stage to exclude other sources of contamination.
The producer of these cheeses, in conjunction with the health authorities, decided and carried out the withdrawal and recall of certain of its raw milk cheeses: morbier, tomme and raclette, distributed throughout the national territory and manufactured until October 11, 2023. The products concerned can be identified according to the sheets published on Rappelconso or from their points of sale. |
Taking into account the findings made by the control services of the departmental directorate of employment, labor, solidarity and the protection of the populations of Jura, the establishment is also the subject of a procedure for suspension of its health approval.
People who have these products are asked not to consume them.
People who within 3-4 days following consuming these products (15 days maximum) experience diarrhea, abdominal pain or vomiting, are invited to consult their treating physician promptly by notifying him of this consumption and the recall of the products by the company.
If there are no symptoms within 15 days following consuming the products concerned, there is no need to worry and consult a doctor..
Please note, however, that cheeses consumed following prolonged cooking (for example, morbier gratin, etc.) do not pose a risk to consumers.
Generally speaking, health authorities point out that, as a precaution, raw milk and cheeses made from raw milk should not be consumed by young children, especially those under 5 years old. You should prefer cooked pressed cheeses (such as Emmental, Comté, etc.), processed spreadable cheeses and pasteurized milk cheeses.
The same recommendation applies to pregnant women and immunocompromised people.
