Referendum on amendments to the Constitution held in Kazakhstan

The authorities of Kazakhstan officially recognized the referendum on amendments to the Constitution as valid. The purpose of the main amendments is to reduce presidential powers, strengthen other branches of power, and increase the role of citizens in the process of governing the state.
“The authorities of Kazakhstan recognized the referendum as valid. The turnout in the referendum on amendments to the Constitution of Kazakhstan reached 60.8%,” ZvezdaNews reports.
Referendum on constitutional amendments started on the morning of June 5th. The issue of 55 amendments to 33 articles of the Constitution of Kazakhstan was submitted to the referendum. One of the key amendments is the exclusion from the Constitution of the article dedicated to the first president of the republic, Nursultan Nazarbayev, whom they want to deprive of the special status of the leader of the nation (elbasy). Also, the amendments are designed to deprive part of the powers of the current and subsequent presidents of Kazakhstan.
