Long names, best names: the Austrian Music Week at a glance.

By Lisa Schneider

It’s not just since the big Soundpark birthday (October 26th!) that we’ve known that birthday celebrations are the best thing, but we know a little more and that’s why we’re moving back to the Ottakringer Brewery for you next January. On January 27th, the big FM4 birthday party will take place with and especially for you, and in addition to Madsen and Moop Mama x Älice, there are of course some very good homegrown acts on the line-up: A slight one and Cousines Like Shit are there, just like Oehl, freekind., I become and Endless Wellness.

The latter even released their very first album the day before, on January 26th. So, as Hjörtur from Endless Wellness says: “You have 24 hours to memorize all the songs.” We’ll add: You’ll get the full dose of “I’ve-finally-released-my-first-album” energy there from Endless Wellness. This will be nothing short of great.

More new music (videos):

Ja, Panik – „Kung Fu Fighter“

Quoting yourself because why not:

Yes, panic is back once more, they took a long break before 2021, but we don’t want to think regarding that anymore. Yes, Panik is back, with everything that good music and, better yet, rock’n’roll has to offer. Somewhere on the label for the album there is something regarding “Blur guitars”, why not, they are one of the best bands in the world. “Don’t play with the rich kids” will be released on February 2, 2024. What now? The second single “Kung Fu Fighter”.

Playing with kitsch and connotations can do that. Yes, panic. Nihilism is no longer so important, and you can say out loud what you are so grateful for in life. Cultural capital on the one hand, even if not a Brandenburg condominium, the super band, consisting of super friends, on the other. “Kung Fu Fighter” is an I-would-like-to-tell-you-something and a don’t-let-me-hang-down, it’s a commitment to being together and then also a negotiation of what’s happening in your head during that time the world outside is crumbling.

And then there is a gentle “thank you” between the verses, because that’s what this song is too, an appreciation and a giving back. Good bands, of course, do exactly that: songs regarding adversity that sound so good that you want to stick with them.

Rambo Kasablanka – „Wasser“

The gut feeling as gentle as the gently covering glitter eyeshadow is where we end up Rambo Kasablanka. The song is called “Water”, the song description goes like this: “Banger – bangs badly, you feel good maybe.” It all sounds like Generation super cool and emotion-free, sounds like not wanting to commit and just getting into the day computer songs write, but of course it’s not that easy. Confession and perhaps the self-sacrifice that goes with it are much closer to a kind of young reality than always knowing where things are going.

DATES – „Perfume River“

For some things you actually have to wait longer until they finally work out: the Vienna group DATES, the most beautiful homegrown Future Islands incarnation since Samuel T. Herring even danced more moderately, has finally completed their debut album. It’s called “Turning Points” and it’s actually the perfect soundtrack for those awfully cold walks alone, when everything is clinking and clattering and you’re wondering whether going to the bar is a good idea today. Sad, a little bit, but those were often the best songs.

Also good and good to know

Rock’n’Roll and thinking regarding the world: The L.L.A. together with Ines Dallaji from the also homegrown band Bad Ida “Chemical Ties“I hope this song will help some of you getting through an ugly (or not so ugly?) breakup” – no one ever said there were enough heartbreak songs in this world. Now add one more on top of that Fraeulein Astrid“The songs coming out on Friday are the beginning of a radically honest healing journey. “It’s regarding the desire to finally be able to let go and leave behind, to find closure and all the accompanying relapses and struggles,” writes AYMZ for the release of their new EP, and now the songs are yours. EP release once more, and now with a sugar title: “High Sugar Content”. Joe Traxler his current song collection.

In this weekly column, Lisa Schneider and Andreas Gstettner-Brugger serve musical tidbits from Austria. New bands and songs, videos and concert highlights across the stylistic vegetable garden.

Baile Funk, Hyperpop and what else: Enesi M. released her first album “Dystopia.”nostalgia“, written in lowercase, perhaps because sometimes you don’t have to give the worst things in life the greatest importance. Amelie Tobien and her unclouded awareness of time. kittyyy was a Alex Reed at FM4 Tribe Vibes last week. Reasons: Coolness and EP release. Stumbling through life and following your instincts: “At least“ von Alligatorman. At last Thursday’s Soundpark, Marco Wanda was a Alex Reed with a new song and Nino from Vienna with a new (first!) book, and there was also a special hour for the FM4 birthday party with all the homegrown acts performing. Marco Wanda was at the FM4 Soundpark night on Sunday with Clemens Fantur We were guests for a detailed interview and we heard new songs by Naked Cameo, Donna Savage and DRAMAS, among others.
