In 1993, the amazing view was discovered in the Lamalunga cave in Italy. There, a complete fossil of an ancient Neanderthal man was preserved in a rock. The discovery of this fossil, known as ‘Altamura’ man, has provided modern science with astonishing information regarding man’s closest extinct relatives. A study of the Altamura Man fossil found that it lived between 1.3 million and 1.72 million years ago. This is the tribe that lived in the cave for decades.
The skeleton was found to have small scar-like marks due to the accumulation of calcite from rainwater over time. This indicates that the cave had a moist atmosphere and airflow.
Studying the Altamura Man fossil was not easy. The fossil can be reached by a 20-minute trek from the outside of the cave. Since many parts of the rock protrude (karst cave system), scientists had to work hard to penetrate into its small cavities. It might not be removed. It was here that scientists learned regarding fossils. Scientists have made interesting discoveries regarding the life and health of ancient man. The test, conducted by Jacopo Moggi-Cecchi, a biology professor at the University of Florence, sheds light on some important findings, Ladd Bible reported.

Altamura Man is an adult. But it was a Neanderthal who had not reached old age but was missing two teeth. Tooth loss is uncommon among this group, as oral health is well maintained. However, the presence of coagulated plaque in Altamura Man’s mouth suggests that dental disease was present at the time.
Neanderthals, a group closely related to Homosapiens, lived in Europe and Asia regarding 3.5 million years ago. They coexisted with modern humans for 30,000 years before disappearing regarding 40,000 years ago. The discovery of Altamura Man brings forward many invaluable discoveries regarding the lives of our ancient ancestors. This provides a much better understanding of human evolution.
Researchers are continuing their research on Altamura Man fossils. The plan is to exhume any part of the fossil from the cave and conduct extensive study.
