The Assize Court of Walloon Brabant: Trial of Alleged Child Torture and Abuse

2023-11-17 20:56:29

The Assize Court of Walloon Brabant will draw lots on Monday for the members of a jury who, from Thursday, November 23, will examine a case in which a thirty-year-old from Genappe appeared. He is accused of having subjected a young girl to torture, of inflicting inhuman treatment on her and of having beaten her.

The facts occurred in July 2021, when the victim was five years old. The man is suspected of having voluntarily plunged her into a bath of very hot water. Significantly burned, the little girl remained in intensive care for more than a month, and was hospitalized for three months. During the investigation, the accused denied the facts, citing an accident which allegedly occurred while the little girl was in her bath, unsupervised.

The accused is the godfather of the little girl, to whom she had been entrusted for several days in July 2021. The accused and his partner went to the emergency room of Nivelles hospital on Monday July 19, 2021 in the evening. The child had significant burns to his buttocks, thighs and private parts. She also had bandages on her feet. Very quickly following her admission to Nivelles hospital, she was transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit of Jolimont hospital, her vital prognosis being compromised.

To explain these burns, which the doctors considered to have been inflicted at least ten hours before admission to the hospital, the accused explained that they might be due to diarrhea in the child, and to the applying expired ointment. He attributed the marks of blows noted by the doctors to a swing accident, which had occurred the previous week when he did not have custody of the little girl.
