This is the shooting king for 2024: Fabio Meier from Glattbrugg wins the Zurich boys’ and girls’ shooting competition. He had to prove himself not only in one, but also in a second round on Monday.

In the first round, Fabio Meier, Silas Stenger and Emilio von Moos scored 32 points and had to shoot a second time. Fabio Meier scored another 33 points in the second round. The boys’ shooting competition said this was “sensational”.

Previously, 13 young people, 11 boys and 2 girls, had scored 34 points.

It is the first draw since 2018 in which the king had not yet been decided at 11 a.m. At 11:22 a.m. it was clear who the winner was.

Fabio Meier, born in 2008, attends high school and has been a member of a shooting club for two years.

A total of 3,187 young people, including 967 girls, tried their luck at the shooting range in Albisgütli, as the Knabenschiessen wrote in a communiqué on Monday afternoon.

This year, Fabio Meier is the winner again – as has been the case for most of the last thirty years, since girls were officially allowed to take part in the boys’ shooting competition. Girls are now at least as good at shooting as boys: while they were noticeably worse than their peers in the 1990s, the sexes are now on a par.

Two girls have reached the top places this time: Sharon Fries from Brütten took 4th place in the boys’ and girls’ shooting competition, making her the best-placed girl. The second girl, Anouk Bürki from Wetzikon, followed in 8th place.

Across all levels of shooting sports, women are actually in the lead. This summer, shooter Chiara Leone won a gold medal for Switzerland at the Olympic Games in Paris, and with 15-year-old young talent Emely Jäggi, the female junior members of the Swiss elite shooters are in an excellent position. So why do boys still mostly win at the boys’ shooting competition?

Boys: Blue, Girls: Orange

Boys: Blue, Girls: Orange

The answer is: because fewer girls shoot. Only a third of the registrations for the boys’ shooting competition come from girls, and the number has been stagnating for years.

The situation is similar in popular sports: shooting clubs are predominantly male, and the picture is still clear: shooting is something men do.
