Three subjects animated the debates on the set of We must speak this Wednesday evening: the art of “weather vaning” in politics, death threats once morest politicians and the release of a film on Abbé Pierre .

Journalist at DH, Vincent Schmidt expressed his opinion on the very rapid comeback of Gwendolyn Rutten in politics. She announced that she was leaving the political world on October 22, before returning less than a month later, to replace Bart Somers in the Flemish government this Tuesday. “I find it shocking,” declared Vincent Schmidt, explaining that ultimately, Gwendolyn Rutten had returned to business “as soon as a nice position became available”. “It’s contempt for the citizen […] It’s like a child who is deprived of a piece of candy, who sulks and leaves if he doesn’t get what he wants,” according to the journalist, before explaining why he thinks that. Strong deaths, to which psychoanalyst Véronique Zana, Steve Gries (lawyer) and Mike Willemaers, corporate communicator, reacted. For the latter, it was not a disgust with politics that pushed the Flemish woman to withdraw, but the positions she hoped for and which she did not obtain. The notion of “political cronyism” was also mentioned during the debate.

Are death threats part of the job of politicians? “No”, decides John Pitseys, Brussels Ecolo parliamentarian, “There is always conflict in politics, it is even the characteristic of democracy […] but threats prevent you from doing politics.” The debate then became lively, notably with the mention by Steve Gries of the case of Simon Moutquin, Ecolo MP, who has published three times more tweets than usual since the October 7 attack. His messages are anti-Israeli, and according to the lawyer present on set, Simon Moutquin “shows himself to be irresponsible” “by blowing on the embers” of the Israeli-Palestinian subject. “It doesn’t justify any violence, but I don’t understand,” concluded the lawyer. Comments which made John Pitseys and Mike Willemaers react, as we can see in the video at the top of the article. The latter also denounced “heavy remarks” from Vooruit MP Fouad Ahidar.

This Wednesday’s show ended with a debate regarding Abbé Pierre and his impact on society, on the occasion of the release of the film “L’Abbé Pierre”.
