Tides, waves, weather and timing: It is an art as a surfer to ride “the perfect wave”. It is quite another to capture this moment. The curator and author Gaspard Konrad has made this his task.
Born in France, he has long been fascinated by the beauty of the ocean and has a passion for surf photography. For him, surfing is an “affair of the heart”. Early on he started collecting pictures of the best surfers and the best surf photographers. He has been sharing them on his Instagram account for a few years @surf_porn, where he is followed by more than 280,000 people. Now he has published his first photo book “Surf Porn”, which invites you to marvel and dream.
The photo book “Surf Porn” will be published on August 31st in the Shape Publisher

Hawaii, Alaska, Australia: The best surfers in the world cavort here
“As surfers, we never stop chasing the perfect wave, the one we will remember for decades to come,” Gaspard writes in the foreword. He sees the world as a “playground” where every continent, country and wave has its own character. Some of the world’s most famous surfing spots can be found in his photo book.
For example Noosa, the dream spot on the Australian Sunshine Coast. Away from world-famous places like Bondi Beach or Manly, the somewhat quieter area in Queensland attracts with warmer water, lots of peace and wonderful nature. Or the small coastal town of Imsouane in southern Morocco. Known among surfers for having the longest waves in the country.
For Gaspard, surfing is different from any other sport. In “Dance with the Ocean” there is no measurable goal. No winners, no losers. It’s all regarding pleasure, regarding finding joy in the vastness. “Success in surfing,” writes the Frenchman, can only be measured by the happiness it brings.
Or, as a popular surfer saying puts it, “The best surfer in the water is the one having the most fun.”
