Drawing, even more than painting, puts us in the presence of the artist. By the simplicity of the means he uses, by his spontaneity, he invites us into the intimacy of the gesture which unfolds directly on the paper. It also allows us to observe the development of a thought: we see the hand hesitating, developing, searching, projecting, copying, reporting. Unlike engraving, to which it is graphically related, drawing is unique. This singularity makes it moving.
In many cases, drawing is a dialogue of the artist with himself. In others, it is with the members of his workshop or with a sponsor that he converses. The art historian Jean Leymarie, author of The drawing. History of an art, in Skira, sees it as the “matrix of art”. The drawing precedes, it is often a project, that is to say a design. And the exhibition which opened at the Jenisch Museum in Vevey, entitled I draw drawings (a drawing, designs) – curated by Emmanuelle Neukomm and Pamella Guerdat, assisted by Leïla Thomas – plays precisely on this double meaning that the Italian language has preserved.
