The armed forces must use biofuel on service trips

Norwegian is responsible for the business trips for employees of the Armed Forces, the Ministry of Defense and Defense Materiel. The first refueling of biofuel was marked at Ålesund Airport Vigra on Thursday.

The airline must mix in 15 percent biofuel on more than 1 million flights until 2028. The agreement is the largest of its kind in Norwegian history, and probably the first in a NATO context.

– Important step

– This agreement is an important step in the defense sector‘s climate and environmental strategy. The sector aims to cut 20 per cent of CO2 emissions by 2030 and reduce emissions from purchased goods and services, says Chief of Defense Eirik Kristoffersen in a press release.

– In order to achieve these goals, reduced emissions from business trips and the Defence’s own flights are central. The work that has been done to pave the way here is important, says the defense chief.

Biofuel for aviation is not currently produced in Norway, but since the defense sector has demanded that refueling take place in Norway, Norwegian has purchased the biofuel from the Finnish company St1’s biorefinery in Gothenburg.

15 percent of the total consumption

Norwegian has now delivered 1 million liters of biofuel to the airport in Ålesund, which will cover 15 per cent of the total consumption on the defense sector’s over 250,000 business trips in 2024. This will reduce CO2 emissions by over 2,000 tonnes already this year.

Chief of Defense Kristoffersen says that they want to facilitate increased production of biofuel in Norway.

Last year, Norwegian was awarded a four-year framework agreement for the defense sector’s flights in Norway and the Nordic region.
