The Arizona Coyotes’ thrilling shootout win over the New Jersey Devils: Recap and Highlights

NEWARK, NJ – After letting an early two-goal lead slip away, the Arizona Coyotes came back to win 4-3 in a shootout over the New Jersey Devils on Friday.

A Nick Schmaltz goal for the Coyotes with 6:05 remaining in the third period forced an overtime period.

Schmaltz fired a one-timer following rookie Logan Cooley skillfully backhanded the puck during a massive attack.

In the play-off, goals from Nick Bjugstad and Schmaltz made the difference. No Devils shooter hit the target during this round of penalty shots.

The Coyotes took a quick two-goal lead early in the game through Matt Dumba and Sean Durzi.

Clayton Keller had two assists as did Cooley, who with two assists collected his first points of his NHL career, being the third player selected in the 2022 draft.

In the loss, Jesper Bratt and Jack Hughes contributed to the Devils’ three goals. Bratt with two goals and an assist while Hughes had three assists. Bratt missed a golden chance to complete his hat trick in the third when he spun alone past Karel Vejmelka, who made the save.

As for Hughes, he has five points in his first two games.

Dougie Hamilton scored the other goal in the loss, a net scored thanks to a powerful slap shot during a massive attack. He also scored Thursday, during the Devils’ opening game.
