European Heritage Days are co-organized by the European Union and the Council of Europe, which first started in 1985. It is one of the most widely celebrated participatory cultural events in Europe. During the European Heritage Days, thousands of monuments and sites open their doors.
The Directorate of Archaeological Museums, Exhibitions and Educational Programs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as national coordinator, participates in the joint action of the Council of Europe and the European Union “European Heritage Days (EHD)”, with the aim raising public awareness of the need to protect cultural heritage against a series of challenges of the modern era.
And this year, our country is adopting the common pan-European celebration theme “European Heritage Days 2024”: Routes, Networks and Connections with the Greek title: Tracing Routes, Networks and Links in Cultural Heritage (See the relevant link
The choice of the theme has resulted from the synergy of the Council of Europe programs “European Days of Cultural Heritage” and “Cultural Routes of Europe” (Cultural Routes Programme) which aims to preserve and highlight the cultural wealth of Europe through a series of themes routes, which interconnect monuments, historical sites and cultural sites, as an element of sustainable development.
In addition, this year’s celebration coincides with the 70th anniversary of the signing of the European Cultural Convention (Paris 1954), which aims to strengthen, deepen and further develop European culture, using local/national culture as a starting point and encouraging cultural actions of European interest among
members.
The Ephorate of Antiquities of Achaia participates again this year in the celebration with the ultimate aim of understanding and interpreting the European cultural identity of the city, entitled: Walk the Route Museum-Patra-Monument with specially designed thematic routes, digital projections, educational programs and actions in Archaeological Museum of Patras.
In this context of the European celebration on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, the following event will take place in co-organization with Europe Direct-Region of Western Greece, the Office of the European Parliament in Greece and the “Ambassador Schools of the European Parliament” Network with the participation of Secondary schools Education of Western Greece.

Museums and Cultural Diplomacy. Commonplace or Utopia?
in the context of the “Stolen Past, Lost Future” Exhibition of the Directorate of Archaeological Museums, Exhibitions and Educational Programs and the Directorate of Documentation and Protection of Cultural Properties of the Ministry of Culture.
The action will be implemented at the Archaeological Museum of Patras and will include interdisciplinary activities that will enhance the understanding and awareness of the participants with references to the various cases of theft and destruction of antiquities, as well as the efforts to recover them. Presentation of examples of successful partnerships to return cultural goods to their countries of origin.

2.Prevention (Institutional Framework, Protection, Mobility of Collections, the culture of the other, Solving an International Problem, legal excavations)
