The Speaker of the Arab Parliament, Muhammad Ahmed Al-Yamahi, stressed in his messages the danger of these attempts that aim to end the role of UNRWA and undermine the rights of Palestinian refugees, especially their right to return in accordance with United Nations resolutions.
In his message, the President of the Arab Parliament said that UNRWA is not just a humanitarian agency that provides vital services in the fields of education, health and relief to more than 6 million Palestinian refugees, but rather is “a symbol of international commitment to the issue of Palestinian refugees and their historical rights.”
He stressed that the occupation’s attempts to liquidate UNRWA come within the framework of its efforts “to liquidate the issue of Palestinian refugees and end their right to return,” which contradicts international laws and United Nations resolutions.
The Arab Parliament stressed the importance of concerted international efforts to protect UNRWA and ensure that it continues to provide its services in accordance with United Nations Resolution No. 194 of 1948, as it is “an essential element in supporting stability and achieving just and comprehensive peace in the region and there is no alternative to it.”
The President of the Arab Parliament called on the international and regional parliaments to take a “firm” stance in support of UNRWA, and urged their countries to put pressure on the “occupying entity” to stop these violations and adhere to the resolutions of international legitimacy and respect international laws, charters and norms, as well as “stop the aggression, war of genocide and ethnic cleansing” against civilians. Isolation, continuing for more than a year.
The Arab Parliament stressed that the rights of Palestinian refugees are among the fundamental and inalienable rights, and any attempts by the occupation to infringe on them will be of no use.
UNRWA was established by United Nations General Assembly Resolution No. 302 of December 8, 1949 “to implement direct relief and employment programs for Palestinian refugees,” and the agency began its operations on May 1, 1950.
Last Monday, the Israeli Foreign Ministry announced that it had officially informed the United Nations that it had canceled the agreement concluded with UNRWA, which allowed it to provide support and work in Palestine.
The Israeli Knesset finally approved, with a majority of 92 votes out of 120, a ban on UNRWA’s activity in the occupied Palestinian territories, claiming that employees of the agency contributed to the attack on October 7, 2023.

**Interview with Muhammad Ahmed Al-Yamahi, Speaker of the Arab Parliament**
**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us today, Mr. Al-Yamahi. The Arab Parliament recently issued a strong statement regarding the role of UNRWA in the context of Palestinian refugees. Can you share with us the context and significance of this statement?
**Muhammad Ahmed Al-Yamahi:** Thank you for having me. Our statement was made in light of alarming attempts to undermine the role of UNRWA, which serves over 6 million Palestinian refugees. We believe that UNRWA is not merely a humanitarian agency; it stands as a symbol of international commitment to the rights of these refugees and their right to return as enshrined in United Nations resolutions.
**Interviewer:** You mentioned the right of return for Palestinian refugees. Why is this right so critical in your view?
**Muhammad Ahmed Al-Yamahi:** The right of return is central to the identity and dignity of Palestinian refugees. It is rooted in international laws and reflects a commitment to justice. When we talk about Palestinian refugees, we are addressing a historical injustice that cannot be ignored. Attempting to dissolve UNRWA is essentially an effort to erase this issue from discourse, which runs counter to longstanding international resolutions.
**Interviewer:** What actions are you calling for from the international community in response to these challenges?
**Muhammad Ahmed Al-Yamahi:** We are urging international and regional parliaments to adopt a unified position that defends UNRWA and the rights of Palestinian refugees. Coordinated global efforts are essential to protect this vital institution and ensure that the rights of refugees are acknowledged and respected.
**Interviewer:** In your opinion, what role does UNRWA play beyond providing basic services to refugees?
**Muhammad Ahmed Al-Yamahi:** UNRWA is crucial in providing education, health, and relief services, but its role transcends that. It plays a critical part in maintaining the historical narrative and identity of Palestinian refugees. By reducing the agency’s influence, we risk erasing the connection and acknowledgment of their rights, which is in direct opposition to our commitments to justice and human rights.
**Interviewer:** Thank you, Mr. Al-Yamahi, for your insights. It’s clear that the message from the Arab Parliament is one of urgency and importance regarding the future of UNRWA and the rights of Palestinian refugees.
**Muhammad Ahmed Al-Yamahi:** Thank you for giving me the opportunity to discuss this vital issue. It is imperative that we all stand together to safeguard the rights and dignity of Palestinian refugees.
