Three days following Southgate announced he would step down from the role he has held for eight years, the FA on Friday called for candidates to apply for the position, but said it had already identified a “number” of potential replacements.
He added that the vacancy, which was advertised on the careers portal on his official website, “is currently overseeing a very purposeful process to appoint the next head coach of the England men’s senior team.”
He pointed out the specifications of the preferred candidate, saying that the next coach must have “significant experience in English football, with a proven track record of achieving results in the English Premier League and/or leading international competitions.”
The FA also set out its ambitions and requirements for the role, including ending England’s decades-long wait for its first title since the 1966 World Cup.
He said part of the job description was to lead and develop the England team “to win a major trophy and be consistently ranked as one of the best teams in the world”.
The deadline for applications is August 2nd.
Potential candidates from abroad might include German Jurgen Klopp, his compatriot Thomas Tuchel and Argentine Mauricio Pochettino.
Among the leading English contenders are Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, former Chelsea managers Graham Potter and Frank Lampard, and England Under-21 manager Lee Carsley.
Sarina Wiegman, who led England women to success at the European Championships and also to the World Cup final last year, might also be considered.
Southgate resigned from his post following England lost to Spain in the European Championship final in Berlin last Sunday.
Southgate led the Three Lions to four major tournaments, lost the European Championship final twice in a row, and reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
