Deleven weeks. Almost three months. Rarely in Belgian social history has a conflict within a company lasted as long as at Delhaize. And within the trade, it is, in the memory of seasoned trade unionists, a first. But if this veritable war over the fate of the staff of the 128 self-managed supermarkets called upon to become franchisees stands out, it is for a more fundamental reason than its duration: “The break in the Belgian tradition of social dialogue. That’s what’s new,” says François Pichault, professor of human resources management at HEC Liège. “Because, in commerce as elsewhere, we have already seen long conflicts linked to restructuring. But all of them ended thanks to consultation. »
