According to a publication of the newspaper “Kathimerini”, new mothers should pay their current insurance contributions, without maintaining their professional activity.
The ministerial decision that will determine the terms and conditions for the implementation of the recent legislative provision is expected to be signed by the competent Minister of Labor, Domna Michailidou, in the last week of February. At the same time, it is estimated that the required platform on the website of the Public Employment Service (DYPA) will be activated in order for self-employed mothers and farmers who are entitled to the allowance to submit applications.
Maternity benefit: Digital application
A basic condition will be for mothers to submit a digital application in order to receive – for 9 months following the birth of their child – a benefit corresponding to the minimum wage, just like mothers with salaried employment. In fact, the allowance will apply retroactively. It will also concern mothers who gave birth to their child up to 14 weeks before the end of 2023 and in particular from September 24, 2023 onwards. Therefore, mothers who have given birth in September will receive at the end of February or the beginning of March, retroactively, for a period of 5 months, 3,900 euros, while until June they will receive a total of 7,020 euros.
In fact, the Minister of Labor has made it clear that mothers who submitted an application to DYPA before the signing of the Ministerial Decision and the activation of the platform will normally receive the allowance, as soon as the process formally begins. The right will also be partially transferable to the father for 7 months. Of course, what will be clarified in the ministerial decision is that in order to receive the allowance, the insured self-employed, self-employed and female farmers must have no debts to the EFKA, that is, they must be insured.
They should also pay their contributions normally, even though they should not normally practice their professional activity. Of course, this is not easy to cross, and officials of the Ministry of Labor estimate that, at least for the first year, the process will proceed as it is, in order to subsequently correct and complete the procedures. At the same time, the decision will provide that the allowance is also entitled to employed mothers of the former TAUTEKO, ETAP-MME and EDOEAP, who under the current legislation only received the maternity and labor allowance from their institution.
Maternity allowance: Beneficiary and the mother who obtains a child through adoption
Finally, it will be clarified that the special provision of maternity protection for self-employed persons is also entitled to the mother who has a child through the process of surrogacy and the self-employed person who adopts a child from the time the child joins the family up to the age of 8.
