The Amazing Revival of the Tree Frog: A Conservation Success Story in Our Country

The tree frog has made a complete comeback in our country. This small amphibian once present throughout the territory was threatened with extinction thirty years ago due to a reduction in its natural habitat. It is developing today to a point that one might not have imagined, according to the association for the protection of nature Natuurpunt.

Around the year 2000, the species was extinct in Wallonia. In Flanders, known populations have been reduced to four relics with only 200 reproductively mature males. Since then, thanks to the targeted management and restoration of the aquatic and terrestrial habitat on Flemish soil, a rapid and unprecedented revival has taken place within the populations not only of the tree frog, but of other species, communicated Natururpunt.

In Wallonia, we started to reintroduce the small frog in 2022. “At the start of this year, following several decades of absence, the characteristic call resounded in certain Walloon nature reserves. If the species manages to establish itself, it is not unlikely that the same scenario as in Flanders will happen once more in the future.“, rejoiced the association.

It remains to be careful, warns the organization, “tree frogs do not age: if reproduction fails several years in a row, the house of cards collapses“. Therefore, the continued management of habitats, with emphasis on pools and ponds, is of great importance, as well as the management of habitats not yet occupied, to allow for future colonization.
