The Allure of the Huawei Mate XT: Imagining an Apple Innovation Remix

To paraphrase the classic, “No no, Huawei, you’ve really impressed me right now.” What is it about? The Huawei Mate XT, the first ever double-foldable smartphone. I saw it was priced at a decent computer. That’s right, it is a computer. An impressive one.

The new equipment presented by the Chinese tycoon is causing extreme emotions, I see. Some consider this very unusual smartphone to be a triumph of style over substance, while others are delighted. I always try to assess technical innovations with a cool head, but I have to honestly admit that I am closer to the latter group.

Why? Well, because ever since we first became fascinated by the world of technology, we have been striving to unify functions. After all, the Huawei Mate XT combines the functions of a smartphone, tablet, and, in fact, a portable computer, if we add a wirelessly pairable keyboard.

Of course, the most unusual thing is the design of the Mate XT, whose 10.2″ diagonal (when unfolded; when folded, it is either 7.9″ or becomes a 6.4-inch smartphone) display can be folded twice, one part folded inwards, the other outwards. Why do I like this idea? Well, I won’t put any laptop in my pocket. In the case of the Mate XT, it is possible.

Let’s also remember that smartphones have already caught up with traditional computers in many respects, at least in the areas in which they are used by home users or office workers. For example, this text is being written on a laptop, and I sometimes enter some materials on an iPad (with a suitable keyboard as an accessory, writing with a stylus, I could at most type out puzzles for pharmacists). However, I have not yet managed to write a text in its entirety on a smartphone. Although… wait.

Yes, I remember how many years ago, while sitting with a friend at a coffee table, during some industry fair, I managed to write a few materials using a keyboard with an infrared port (!) connected to the Fujitsu Siemens Loox 720 pocket PC (does anyone remember what it was?) I was using at the time. It was possible even then.

Of course, the Huawei Mate XT, although it definitely looks better as a multitasking device, combining the roles of a smartphone, tablet, and even – in my opinion – a laptop, is for now a demonstration of strength, a show of possibilities. Its practical dimension is eliminated by the very high price of this device (in Chinese currency, the cheapest version costs around PLN 20,000). Nevertheless, someone has opened another door in the smartphone field. After all, the first laptop was also terribly expensive, right?

The device presented by Huawei not only folds twice, but also looks great. Its thickness when unfolded is only 3.6 mm. The whole thing weighs only 298 grams. And that’s including a large photo module based on the Mate X5. The resolution of this large (for a device that fits in your pocket) screen is an impressive 3184 x 2232 pixels, of course in the folded versions it is smaller, logically. The screen is refreshed at a rate of 120 Hz, it is a flexible LTPO OLED.

Interestingly, the Chinese brand has not revealed the chipset whose computing power powers this device. All we know is that this mysterious system supports 16 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB of data. Speculation and knowledge of the market suggest that we are dealing with some top-of-the-range system from the Kirin family, the operating system is of course the latest HarmonyOS 4.2, a system based on AOSP (Android Open Source Project), but without Google services, as in every new Huawei smartphone (although users are doing fine, but that’s a topic for another article).

Another interesting fact is that in the Chinese market (and only there) the Mate XT supports two-way satellite connectivity to the Chinese Tiantong communications satellite constellation via the operator China Telekom. Battery? A three-piece design (understandably, just look at this equipment), composite with silicon carbide cells, with a capacity of 5600 mAh.

A very interesting device, although it is difficult to expect it to become a volume bestseller.
