ROME – Italy’s Prime Minister Mario Draghi has resigned following his allies decided to abstain from the confidence vote. President Sergio Mattarella, who accepted the resignation, asked Draghi to remain caretaker prime minister. With this, the dissolution of Parliament due to expire next year and by-elections are more likely.

Draghi’s National Unity coalition parties, Forza Italia and 5 Star Movement, decided to boycott the vote of confidence. Draghi, who was the head of the European Central Bank, took over as the Prime Minister 17 months ago. Draghi resigned when the 5 Star Movement abstained from a vote on a bill in parliament last week, but the president did not accept.
