In duet with his friend Jack Lahana, Rob releases an album rich in prestigious guests (Thomas Mars, Sébastien Tellier and others). THE soundtrack composer offers himself a breath: his big comeback to pop?
When we met Rob in his studio three years ago to do his portrait, he greeted us with a laugh: “ What a funny idea to take an interest in my career! ». Before adding this other sentence that says a lot regarding him: “Misunderstanding is the big story of my life – which is quite funny, for a musician…” A man in the shadows as humble as he is gifted, Robin Coudert has a life that resembles a novel. As a child, his first music teacher was Michel Leeb’s trumpeter. Rob becomes a teenager in the Phoenix, goes through the Fine Arts and releases two albums in the early 2000s. He composes wonders (“Music” or “Never Enough”), he has the right look and the right network, everything to become the George Harrison of the French Touch, and nothing goes as planned: flop and galleys. Musician for Sébastien Tellier and opener in a cinema, he rows. Always whimsical and inspired, he threw himself into the slightly crazy project of Dodecalogue – a series of twelve maxis which will not all see the light of day. In 2010, he produced A child of the century, a splendid Alizée album that no one understands. Back to square one ? Keyboardist on the Phoenix tours, Rob converted mainly into a soundtrack composer. He finally won his letters of nobility there by becoming the Georges Delerue of the 21st century.th century – his most famous music being without doubt that of the Legends Officeand the most beautiful perhaps that of Planetarium.
CHISELLED SOUND
In 2020, Rob also told us: “Plunging back into the business, doing rehearsals at Studio Bleu with rental gear, blah… My ego has been sufficiently tested by all my failures, I no longer have the fantasy of making a record Who walks. » Despite everything, it’s not just cinema in life. Rob momentarily leaves his hat as a brilliant craftsman of the seventh art to plunge headlong into pop with Jack Lahana. The two friends called historical relatives (Thomas Mars de Phoenix and Sébastien Tellier) but not only – on the thirteen titles that include summer camp, we come across the Catastrophe collective as well as Areski Belkacem. Rob extends different tracks sketched out in the past: the disc recalls both Satyred Love and The Dodecalogue ; as for the excellent song “À Egalité”, it might have appeared on Alizée’s album. There are other nuggets, such as the tracks “Tomorrow” or the phenomenal “Amoureux”, where we find Sébastien Tellier at his best. In addition to striking melodies and a chiseled sound, summer camp is distinguished by this too rare quality: we feel that Rob & Jack Lahana are having fun. Marketing has never been Rob’s strong suit and, at 45, there is no longer any time to chase fashions. In 2020, praising the late work of Ennio Morricone, he finally made this confession to us: “I love aging artists! » Youth did not give him the success he deserved, maturity will bring him the recognition he deserves.
